Let's learn more about Kelly...
Q: Kelly, what's a book, podcast, or movie that has had a significant impact on you and why?
A: "Nightingale" by Kristin Hannah is a book I read recently and my current favorite. It was an impactful read because it detailed how people deal with and survive in the face of adversity.
Another book that had a significant impact on me growing up is "Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret" by Judy Blume. It was the first book I read that I truly enjoyed, and it unlocked my passion for reading over the years. I read it when I was in 6th grade, so it was very relatable as I was going through some of the same things that the explored.
Q: What's one skill or talent you have that isn't directly related to your job, but you're really proud of?
A: Playing the piano. I took lessons when I was younger, and I don’t naturally have an ear for music or a lot of musicality, so I feel like I had to put in a lot of work to learn how to play. I haven’t played recently, but someday I’d like to get back into it. [Honorable Mention: Kelly's pickle ball Skills! Kelly is highly competitive and always up for a game. Our team couldn't resist getting her this 'Pickle Baller' shirt at our annual retreat!]
Q: If you could have dinner with anyone, living or dead, who would it be and why?
A: I would love to have dinner with both of my grandmothers. My maternal grandmother passed away when I was a baby. She was a single mother who persevered through numerous challenges to raise and provide for my mom. I'd love to hear more of her story and learn how she approached life.
My paternal grandmother was also an amazing woman. She grew up during the Great Depression and put herself through college, eventually earning a master's degree at a time when that was uncommon for women.
Although I knew her growing up, I was too young to truly understand all the things she accomplished and experienced. Now that I have more perspective in my own life, I would cherish the opportunity to talk to her.
Q: What's a hobby or interest of yours that might surprise your colleagues?
A: I really enjoy and am fairly decent at crossword puzzles. I like to do the New York Times crossword, as well as all their other word games like Wordle and Spelling Bee. I miss doing crosswords on pen and paper!
Another skill I have, which probably won’t surprise my colleagues, is keeping up with celebrity gossip. For some reason, my memory and recall about different celebrities and their lives are much better than my memory for other things!
[We can attest to this—if you ever need a trivia partner, Kelly is your person]
Q: What inspired you to start The Violet Group?
A: Being able to build something from the ground up has been incredibly impactful.
The ability to shape a mission that helps people not only gives me flexibility and ownership over what I’m creating but also allows me to live my life on my terms. Plus, I get to do it with people I truly enjoy working with.
Q: What has been your favorite part about being a Co-Founder of TVG so far?
A: Getting to learn how to partner with my co-founder, Stefanie, and what roles we each are going to play in the business. Together, we're learning - every day! - about how we want to shape the company, and uncovering the various things we didn't even know we didn't know about running or starting a business.
I’ve learned a ton, and I've enjoyed getting to figure it all out with someone I work well with.
